DESCRIPTION
A cadufo, also known as an alcatruz (Octopus trap), is the ideal tool for octopus fishing. Its simplicity is what makes it unique. Additionally, it is made of special plastic certified by health authorities, making it safe for the environment and for people who consume these animals, as it does not produce harmful microplastics.
The cadufos are cylindrical elements made from virgin plastic (i.e., no recycled plastic is used in their manufacture), typically dark-colored, with a reservoir at the bottom filled with cement to provide stability and weight. This ensures that the cadufo remains stationary and does not roll on the seabed.
Cadufos are attached to a rope, which in turn is tied to a “mother” rope, creating a line where octopuses take refuge, using it as a burrow to protect themselves from predators. Unlike traps, cadufos do not require bait since their purpose is to provide shelter rather than a food source. Because of their dimensions, it is very rare to find two octopuses in the same cadufo.
CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
Cadufos require minimal maintenance. When taken out of the water and placed on land, they can be cleaned with fresh water. If necessary, barnacles or other crustaceans that may have become attached to the surface can be removed. If the cement in the reservoir has fallen out or cracked, it should be removed and replaced with new cement.
